Review: 2000 Trees Festival 2024

This year’s festival season has not taken place under sun-bleached sky’s but through mud and lashings of icy rain, however…

Don Broco (photographer Gareth Bull)

…swinging in like the superhero it is, the award-winning independent 2000Tress Festival delivers a glorious handful of days for dancing and singing bathed in better weather and firmer ground.

2000Trees Festival’s creator Rob Scarlett and the team behind scenes like the attendees are music loving souls that along with security, vendors, and volunteers all conscientiously diligently delivering safe yet spirited days and nights full of entertainment. Early Wednesday entry allows setting up camp right in the middle of Camp Kev and Camp Turner, The perfect spot for late night camp sessions and a morning wake up curtesy of Story Time Yoga and Morning Playtime from the Word stage.

Selective plucking out highlights is never easy but kicking off are the delayed Crawlers who hit the stage nearly an hour late with I Don't Want It, was certainly one. Holly Minto, eyes sparkling and with a wide grin announces, “We nearly died to get here today” and the magnetic monochrome suited singer is not exaggerating. While barrelling along the M6 a wheel decided to remove itself from their van. The bands set was sliced to just the four tracks, but they threw everything into them. Closing with Come Over (Again) the applause is for providing a stunning set as well as thanks for the band’s safety.

A refreshingly bouncy sun-saturated main stage set from the Nova Twins is oodles of fun and raw energy until a rouge crowd surfers boot finds my face during Undertaker. The price of being in the thick of pit action at times. However, stepping back to allow the spinning stars a chance to stop you do get to experience Amy Love and Georgia South on a sea of arms float above the crowd continuing to play and deliver the juicy Undertaker and bombastic Choose Your Fighter.

Bob Vylan (photographer Joe Singh)

A raging torment of emotion that even nature can not control, no not the cloud burst that soaked our special little spot in the Cotswold Hills on Saturday afternoon but our favourite spooks Creeper. In the tented dusk of The Axiom, they deliver a lustily decadent rock opera of a set bursting with numerous sonic calling cards, imaginatively ambitious musical narratives and unequivocally decadence theatrics.

Each member is a conduit of an eclectic musical spectrum of influences and creative input. The cathartic lament of Crickets with Hannah Greenwood and Ian Miles stripped to essentials, maximizing its potent intimacy. Roaring undulations beaten out by Jake Fogerty are a powerful tempest matched by Sean Scott’s highspeed picked trebling bass. While William Von Gould is an embarrassment of lead singer assets, mingling fist-pumping enthusiasm with gleeful melodrama, all the while belting out lyrics as he swaggers, struts and flies about the stage with devilish glee.

Death From Above 1979 (photographer Gareth Bull)

And as we wheeze and moan our way back to the car park dragging our homes for the past four nights through the trees and up the hills, we reminisce about Boston Manor sounding stunning in The Forest. Cassyette delivering a splendidly raspy jolt of rock singed electropop, Bob Vylan enrapturing the main stage audience like only he can and a stunningly dynamic run though of their debut album You're a Woman, I'm a Machine from Death From Above 1979.

2000trees highlights seem infinite but like all good things 2024’s instalment winds to a close as the sky lights up with an explosion of fireworks as Don Broco end their hit stuffed set.
